pattern, geometric shapes, organic shapes

Preparation:
Have 12x12” white paper cut for every student. Make a copy of the design worksheet and colored pencil worksheet for every student.

Materials and Resources:
  • evaluation sheet
  • example of the Repeat Design
  • colored pencils
  • 12x12” white paper
  • pencil
  • design worksheet
  • rulers
  • light boxes
  • black Sharpie marker
  • colored pencil worksheet

Motivation-Instruction:
  • Teacher will show example of the project.
  • Teacher will demonstrate how to make a design for the project using the design worksheet (one shape coming out of each of the four corners of the square pointing towards the center).
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Students will complete the design worksheet (6 rough drafts), choose one design, and then they will trace that design in black marker (front and backside of the paper).

Procedure:
Day 1:
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Teacher will show examples of the project.
  • Students will complete the colored pencil worksheet.
  • Students will complete the design worksheet (6 rough drafts), choose one design, and then they will trace that design in black marker (front and backside of the paper).
Day 2:
  • Students will receive their 12x12” white paper, and with a ruler and pencil, make a grid on the paper consisting of 36 2x2” squares.
  • Students will trace their designs with a pencil from the worksheet onto the 12x12” white paper – flipping the design correctly as they traced as demonstrated in class.
  • Students may begin coloring their repeat design once it is all traced, with colored pencils – coloring dark using no black and leaving no white space.

Day 3:
