Pop Art Faces Lesson
8 Days (90 minute class)
Michigan Merit Curriculum:

P.2 Demonstrate skillful use of appropriate vocabularies,
tools, instruments, and technologies of the visual,
performing, or applied arts discipline.

P.4 Perform, present, exhibit, publish, or demonstrate the
results of the artistic/creative process for an audience.

Objectives:
  • Students will paint a series of their own faces in a Pop Art style, similar to Andy Warhol's art.
  • Students will demonstrate their knowledge of colors and painting techniques.
  • Students will display their artwork in the hallways.

Vocabulary Words:

Preparation:
Take a picture of each student (just faces) or use school pictures off of Zangle. Print one large photograph off for each student and 2 pages containing 4 pictures each for each student (Pictures need to be solarized on computer). Make copies of value and gray scale worksheets for each student and make copies of painting practice worksheets for each student.

  • 8 small photographs of student's face (2 pages containing 4 pictures each)
  • paint – red, yellow, blue, orange, purple, green, white, and black
  • magazines
  • paint brushes

Motivation-Instruction:
  • Teacher will show example of the project.

Procedure:

Day 1:
  • Teacher will show example of the project.
  • Teacher will show examples of Andy Warhol's artwork.
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Students will complete value and gray scale worksheets.
  • Students will complete painting practice worksheets.
  • Students will receive a large print of their face and 8 small photographs of their face (2 pages containing 4 pictures each)

Day 2:
  • Students will cut and tape their 8 faces together.
  • Students will begin painting their faces – directly on the copy paper according to the color scheme on the evaluation sheet (this should be written on the board).

Day 3:
  • Students will continue painting the 8 faces.

Day 4:
  • Student will continue painting the 8 faces.

Day 5:
  • Student will finish painting the 8 faces.

Day 6:
  • Student will draw their large face and begin painting it using one of the color schemes from the smaller faces.

    Day 7:
  • Students will continue to paint their large face.

Day 8:
  • Students will finish painting their large face and outline in black marker when dry and finished.
