Jungle Painting Lesson Plan
5 Days (55 minute class)

Michigan Merit Curriculum:

C.3 Understand, recognize, and use the elements,
organizational principles, patterns, relationships,
techniques, skills, and applications of the visual, performing,
or applied arts discipline.

P.4 Perform, present, exhibit, publish, or demonstrate the
results of the artistic/creative process for an audience.

Objectives:
  • Students will learn about artist Henri Rousseau.
  • Students will demonstrate their ability to use paints properly.
  • Students will create their own jungle painting.
  • Students will display their artwork in the hallways.

Preparation:
Make copies of Henri Rousseau's biography for each student. Have examples out of Henri Rousseau's artwork and pictures of jungle animals.

Materials and Resources:
  • evaluation sheet
  • example of the project
  • example of Henri Rousseau's artwork
  • jungle animal pictures
  • green construction paper
  • 12x18” white rough draft paper
  • 12x18” white paper
  • a variety of colors of tempera paint
  • copies of Henri Rousseau's biography
  • pencil
  • glue
  • scissors
  • black Sharpie marker

Motivation-Instruction:
  • Teacher will show example of the project and examples of Henri Rousseau's artwork.
  • The class will read about Henri Rousseau.
  • Students will look at jungle animals, then choose a jungle animal to depict in their painting.
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.

Procedure:
Day 1:
  • Teacher will show example of the project and examples of Henri Rousseau's artwork.
  • The class will read about Henri Rousseau.
  • Students will look at jungle animals, then choose a jungle animal to depict in their painting.
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Students will begin drawing their rough draft.

Day 2:
  • Students will finish their rough draft, outline in marker, and trace their picture in pencil onto the final white paper.
  • Students will begin painting their jungle picture.

Day 3:
  • Students will continue painting.

Day 4:
  • Students will finish painting.
  • Students will draw and cut out leaves from the green construction paper and begin gluing them around their painting, creating a frame.

    Day 5:
  • Students will finish gluing the leaves and turn in their completed artwork. (The neater the artwork and the more details, the better the grade!)
