Art Nouveau

3 Days (55 minute class)

P.2 Demonstrate skillful use of appropriate vocabularies,
tools, instruments, and technologies of the visual,
performing, or applied arts discipline.

Objectives:
  • Students will create a Gustav Klimt inspired artwork out of scratchboard and magazine pictures.
  • Students will learn about the artist Gustav Klimt and Art Nouveau.

Vocabulary Words:
Gustav Klimt, Art Nouveau, scratchboard, pattern, line

Preparation:
Have a wide selection of magazines ready with photographs of people.

Materials and Resources:
  • evaluation sheet
  • example of the project
  • scratch art tools
  • scratchboard
  • magazines
  • scissors
  • glue
  • examples of Gustav Klimt's artwork
Motivation-Instruction:
  • Teacher will show example of the project.
  • Discuss what Art Nouveau is and who Gustav Klimt was.
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Teacher will explain what scratchboard is and how to use scratch art tools.
  • Discuss different types of lines and review what pattern is.

Procedure:

Day 1:
  • Go over evaluation sheet and expectations.
  • Teacher will show examples of the project.
  • Discuss what Art Nouveau is and who Gustav Klimt was.
  • Teacher will explain what scratchboard is and how to use scratch art tools.
  • Discuss different types of lines and review what pattern is.
  • Students will find a photograph of a person from a magazine (showing head and arms) and cut it out and then glue it onto their scratchboard.

Day 2:
  • Students will begin scratching lines and patterns into their scratchboard, creating a background and clothing.
Day 3:
  • Students will finish scratching lines and patterns, completing their Gusatav Klimt inspired artwork.
